Title: Demonglass (Hex Hall #2)
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Published: Hyperion by March, 2011
Pages: 359
Rating: ★★½☆☆
Purchase: The Book Depository

Sophie Mercer thought she was a witch. That was the whole reason she was sent to Hex Hall, a reform school for delinquent Prodigium (a.k.a. witches, shape-shifters, and faeries). But then she discovered the family secret, and the fact that her hot crush, Archer Cross, is an agent for The Eye, a group bent on wiping Prodigium off the face of the earth.

Turns out, Sophie’s a demon, one of only two in the world-the other being her father. What’s worse, she has powers that threaten the lives of everyone she loves. Which is precisely why Sophie decides she must go to London for the Removal, a dangerous procedure that will either destroy her powers for good-or kill her.

But once Sophie arrives, she makes a shocking discovery. Her new housemates? They’re demons too. Meaning, someone is raising demons in secret, with creepy plans to use their powers, and probably not for good. Meanwhile, The Eye is set on hunting Sophie down, and they’re using Archer to do it. But it’s not like she has feelings for him anymore. Does she?

Final Thoughts:
Hex Hall proved an addictive read for me, finishing it in a single sitting, but this time around, I found it hard to reconnect. Leaving the school behind, we’re sent to the magic council in England, but it’s not nearly as exciting. They’re in a massive building with over thirty kitchens—that was about as exciting as it got. Plus, removed from the school setting, all of the bitchiness is gone. You might say that’s a good thing, but without the tension, it fell flat. I cared little about Sophie’s ‘romance’, so the lack of plot for most of the book left me with hardly anything to hang onto.

I hardly get hardcovers since they don’t sell them in Australia very often, so I thought I’d treat myself on book depository and buy all of the Demon’s Lexicon series and a few others I’ve been wanting. I’m obsessed with Sarah Rees Brennan’s writing, so I knew I had to buy these, even though I already have the UK/Aus paperbacks. I’m behind on both the Chronicles of Nick and Hex Hall series. I read the first books in each, bought the second, and then let them sit gathering dust for a year. I’ve been reading Fated over the past couples days, so when my friend, Brittany, and I went to the Claudia Gray signing in Brisbane yesterday, I saw Hunting Lila on the shelves at Dymocks and gave in and grabbed it. I did get four other books when I stopped by Big W this week, but I’m at my parents’ house this weekend, so they’re going to have to wait until next week’s IMM.

A heap of my AmazonUK purchases turned up this week. I got the complete Midnighters trilogy by Scott Westerfeld. I borrowed these from the library a couple months ago and really enjoyed them. I’ve seen a heap of different covers for this series, but I settled on these ones. My Hex Hall hardback finally turned up, I think it took four weeks to get to me from the UK, lucky I’ve already read it, otherwise I would have been stressing. Volume 4 of The Morganville Vampires bind-ups was just released, I had it pre-ordered so mine shipped early (thanks book depository). I still haven’t caught up on reading these, I’ve only read the first two in the series. Lastly, is The Demon’s Surrender. I can’t help but smile at it. I’ve been waiting on this new release for so long. I’m absolutely in LOVE with this series. If you haven’t read book 1: The Demon’s Lexicon, go out and get it now.

Don’t forget to enter my INTERNATIONAL Giveaway for a chance to win one of Sarah Rees Brennan’s books.

As you can see, my mailbox went into overload this week. Lots of my bookdepository orders arrived (every single book packaged individually), but I still have a couple more I’m waiting on. I went to the city this week with my friend Brittany from Nice Girls Read Books and we stalked all the bookstores we could find. We nearly got stuck in a back alley tow away zone trying to find a park for one of the little independent bookshops. City driving, not fun… On top of the 12 books that arrived in the mail, I grabbed 6 at the shops on impulse and picked up 7 more from the big library in the city. Out of all of these, I’d read six already (Wake, My Soul To Take, Intertwined, Unraveled, Clockwork Angel and Infinity) but I needed them for my collection. I especially love the shiny foil coverslip on Clockwork Angel, it looks great sitting beside my TMI hardbacks.
