Title: Shine Light (Night Creatures #3)
Author: Marianne de Pierres
Published: November, 2012 by Random House
Pages: 229
Rating: ★★★½☆
Purchase: Booktopia

Ixion. The island of ever-night.

If she had a choice, Naif wouldn’t go back. But her friends will die if she doesn’t find a cure for the badges that are slowly killing them, and her brother is there, fighting against the Ripers who hold everyone in thrall. And Naif has knowledge that might save them all.

First she must solve the mystery of Ixion’s eternal night. Then she must convince everyone – rebels and revellers alike – to join her cause. And all the while, she must fight the urge to go to Lenoir – her greatest love, her mortal enemy.

The secrets of Ixion must be revealed. The evils must be stopped. A new dawn will come.

Final Thoughts:
This was such an improvement on Angel Arias. I found the last book harder to get into, but I just breezed through this one. I think it was due in part to the return to the night world of Ixion. A couple years of passed and a bit of the magic has faded, but Shine Light proved to be a worthy successor, drawing me back into the carnival-esque land of church dorms, clubbing, rival gangs and life–stealing monsters. Book two left all of that behind. Perhaps if I had skipped straight from Burn Bright to Shine Light I may have enjoyed this series more than I did.

Title: Angel Arias (Night Creatures #2)
Author: Marianne de Pierres
Published: October, 2011 by Random House
Pages: 264
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Purchase: Booktopia

Retra – now called Naif – has escaped from Ixion, the island of ever-night. She doesn’t know if her friends on the island survived the battle between the Ripers and the rebels. But she does know that she must return home, behind the sealed walls of Grave, to find out why the Ripers have been seen there talking to the councillors. What links the two worlds?

First she must convince Ruzalia to help her. The fierce pirate captain saves those who face terrible fates on Ixion, but that doesn’t guarantee their gratitude. Instead, she faces a revolt – and Naif is caught in the middle.

Naif will need all her courage to survive. For Lenoir, who wants to keep her safe, for her friends Suki and Rollo, if they live, for Markes, who has secrets of his own, and for the new friends she will make on this journey.

The fate of worlds depends on it.

Final Thoughts:
Fast paced and full of suspenseful situations, things never seem to let up for Naif. But while it may have had that in its favour, it suffered from the second book syndrome in a way. It still held up quite well as it kept me actively reading, but it felt like there was a spark lacking. Burn Bright introduced us to Ixion, a night time world full of monsters and mystery, but here, we’re sent back to Naif’s hometown on reconnaissance. The majority of the book is spent on the hunt for information whereas it could have been used for something just a little more exciting. But with the third book shaping up to be an Ixion showdown, I’m holding out hope.

It’s the end of 2011 already so I thought I would compile a list of the Top 15 books that I’ve read throughout the year. The titles link to my reviews for each if you want to check out what I thought about them. They’re ordered by the date in which I read them. It was hard enough narrowing down my favourites to just fifteen without trying to rank them too. Let me know if you’ve read any of these, or feel free to tell me what books you loved in 2011.

In My Mailbox is a meme hosted by The Story Siren, which allows bloggers to share what books they’ve received in the past week. They can be from stores, contests, tours or publishers!

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi (purchased)
Blood Bound by Rachel Vincent (purchased)
Angel Arias by Marianne de Pierres (purchased)
Smoulder by Brenna Yovanoff (thanks to Publishers)

Can’t wait to get into Angel Arias, I’ve been checking my local store for it since its release, and they finally had it in stock. I also found Shatter Me and thought I might as well get it while I was there. I already had the US Blood Bound, but when I saw that the Australian one was regular book size and not tiny like the US one, I gave in a bought myself a second copy. I probably should get around to reading it soon, I’ve already read Rachel’s other 11 books this year and loved them. Thanks to Simon & Schuster for Smoulder. Daughter of hell, sounds like my kind of book. And sorry to those I didn’t get back to last week, I was in crazy cram-mode for my exams.

Title: Burn Bright (Night Creatures #1)
Author: Marianne de Pierres
Published: March, 2011 by Random House AU
Pages: 316
Rating: ★★★★½
Purchase: The Book Depository

Retra doesn’t want to go to Ixion, the island of ever-night, ever-youth and never-sleep. Retra is a Seal – sealed minds, sealed community. She doesn’t crave parties and pleasure, experience and freedom. But her brother Joel left for Ixion two years ago, and Retra is determined to find him.

Braving the intense pain of her obedience strip to escape the only home she’s ever known, Retra stows away on the barge that will take her to her brother. When she can’t find Joel, Retra finds herself drawn deeper into the intoxicating world of Ixion. Come to me, whispers a voice in her head. Who are the Ripers, the mysterious guardians of Ixion? What are the Night Creatures Retra can see in the shadows? And what happens to those who grow too old for Ixion? Retra will find that Ixion has its pleasures, but its secrets are deadly.

Final Thoughts:
I did not expect to love this book as much as I did. From someone who usually eats up the paranormal romances, I found the lacking romantic front slightly refreshing. Sure Burn Bright is a culture shock at first, but it’s a good one. The first quarter of the book had me struggling to take everything in. There were strange names, language barriers and differing beliefs as well as flying boats and pirates. Yes, I immediately knew Burn Bright was different. No snuggly werewolves or mopey vampires here. But once I got over the initial bump and settled into the magic of Ixion, I couldn’t put this baby down.

It was another one of those sleep deprived nights as I got up early for the three hour drive to Brisbane on Saturday morning for the Brisbane Writers Festival. With Brittany from Nice Girls Read Books, I had my first attempt at driving in the middle of the city. Fun. We made it home in one piece and that’s the main thing. We’d been waiting for a month or so for Maggie Stiefvater’s workshop. It was a ticketed event limited to 16 people, and not everyone turned up, so it was an intimate setting. The two hour workshop flew by extremely quick. It was really relaxed with Maggie throwing back and forth around the small meeting room, letting each of us talk about what we’d been working on and asking her anything we liked.

I took down a lot of notes as she discussed a heap of things from plotting to characters and the elusive gimme points. It was a lot of fun. She had so much energy bursting from her that it felt nothing like a lecture. It was just her and us. She had her boarding pass with her which she’d used to scribble all over with a sharpie, full of various discussion topics. She talked about writing as a roadtrip where you know your destination but if you come across somewhere random like Little Norway along the way, you just have to check it out, even it turns out to be something completely worth avoiding.

Melissa from Spellbound By Books was also at the workshop too, so we got to meet up with her again. She’s become our Brisbane blogger friend that we keep catching up with. It was weird, but when we walked into the State Library, even though it was packed, we stumbled right into her. It happened twice too, after lunch as well. We should probably exchange numbers instead of relying on coincidence. Before Maggie had to leave, she stuck around after the allotted time and signed everyone’s books. I’d brought eight with me since I have both UK paperbacks and US hardcovers of the Wolves Of Mercy Falls series. She even signed the front of the cardboard box that houses the hardcovers so I can display her signature without having to flip open the books.

After Maggie, the three of us got tickets and went into Super Natural Superstars panel. Australian authors Marianne de Pierres and Trent Jamieson were there doing a Q&A. They talked about Spec Fic and crossing over between genres. They also discussed things like the Australian book industry and developing a network of people for researching and critiquing. The main point seemed to be that you need to be willing to ask others, as they’re usually happy to help. Marianne said that you need to get the people around you to realise that writing is a part of your life and you take it seriously. Because if you really want to write, you’ll find the time.

After it ended, we dashed out of the room and got to the very of the signing line downstairs. Marianne was so easy to talk to, and has a very distinctive Australian accent. She reminds me of someone but I’m struggling to figure out who. She hopped out from behind the desk for each of us so we could take our photos, which was awesome of her. I can’t wait to finish off Burn Bright now!

Finally my UK copies of Shiver and Forever arrived. I also went and picked Lament and Ballad. I’m going to try and get through as many of Maggie’s books before her workshop at Brisbane Writer’s Festival in September. I can’t wait to go to that. I borrowed Personal Demons off a friend and I’ll be getting to that in September. I’ve heard some not so great things about it, so my expectations aren’t very high, but we’ll see. Bloodspell, Wildefire and Angelfire are ones I ordered from Book Depository and they arrived in only 5 days. I’ve been meaning to order them for a while so it’s good to have them on my shelf. Hopefully I get time to read them soon. I read Black Swan Rising last month when I stumbled across it at my local library. It was one I really enjoyed, so now I finally have myself a copy, plus the recently released sequel The Watchtower. Hopefully it’s just as good. There’s just too many books I want to read that I can’t pick from. If you’ve read any that you think I should put at the top of my list, let me know.

Here are my reviews from the past week:
Skovron, Jon, Misfit
Zevin, Gabrielle Birthright #1, All These Things I’ve Done
